Summer Exhibition 2008

This page describes, and provides links to, the exhibit 'Back to the Big Bang? at the Large Hadron Collider'. This was displayed at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition, 30th - 3rd July 2008 and Oxford Trust, 26th July - 29th August 2008.

2) Exhibit description.

The exhibit is 4m wide x 2m deep and 2.5m high. There is no public access into the stand as the front is closed off by a table and graphic panels.

The sides and back of the exhibit have a continuous graphic - see the sides and rear graphics (840kb jpeg).

At each end of the table are a sloping panel (approx 0.75m x 0.75m) - see ' the family of fundamental particles' and 'how particle detectors work' (264kb pdf).

Behind the table are three stands holding labels relating to exhibits on the table - see label 1 (92kb jpeg), label 2 (95kb jpeg) and label 3 (84kb jpeg).

On the the table there is a time-of-flight module from Alice, a VELO module, a piece of aerogel from LHCb and a lead tungstate crystal and phototriode from CMS.

The Real Time Monitor for the Grid is also displayed.
